As Peru Prepares for Brazil, Fans Feel Insulted by Claudio Pizarro

Claudio Pizarro, captain of Peru's national soccer team has affirmed that he will not apologize to fans of the national team, Universitario de Deportes - also known as "La U". Fans of national soccer teams have been given several nicknames, nicknames for La U fans range from Trinchera Norte to gallinas (hens).

When forward Claudio Pizarro stated that fans who booed him while on the soccer field were gallinas, it created an uproar among La U fans to the point that Pizarro was strongly insulted and provoked to fight when he arrived to Peru's airport on Monday evening.

"I never said La U fans were gallinas. Those that are offended, it's their problem. I was referring to a group of people that bother, but not the Trinchera Norte," said Pizarro. "I don't have to apologize to anyone."

Pizarro explained that the experience he had at the airport was uncomfortable and added that those involved were people that wanted to appear on television. He affirmed that those who insulted him while playing were gallinas, whether they were La U fans or not.

When asked about his match against Brazil, Pizarro stated he felt good. "I'm not at my best, like I'd like to be but I want to play and win. I want to do things better and concentrate on that."

Peru's soccer team is to go up against former FIFA World Cup champ Brazil in its third World Cup qualifier on Sunday November 18. Peru has not won a 2010 World Cup qualifier yet. The soccer game has been scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. local time.
